Yes, it is that time of year again. The Holiday season is upon us and the Springfield Fire Company is once again getting it's message out about Fire Safety. This is a time to be celebrating and enjoying all the joys of the season and the Members of Station 44 would like to make sure that every resident of Springfield Township is safe and that they are not affected by the tragedy of fire.
Listed below is a checklist to follow to make sure everything is safe during the holiday season and into the new year!!

First and most important, make sure you have changed the batteries in your smoke detectors and have checked the detectors to make sure they are working properly.

Check all electrical cords and lights to make sure that they are not damaged. If the cords are frayed or cracking, do not use them, discard them and replace with accessories that have the U.L. (Underwriters Laboratory) label.

Make sure that lights are clear of any objects that could easily catch fire, such as window curtains or dried up brush (leaves). When placing lights in bushes or trees, make sure all the dead leaves have been cleared from under the shrubbery.

If you plan on having a real evergreen Christmas tree inside the home, make sure you pick out a tree that is fresh and keep the tree watered to prevent it from drying out to quickly. If the tree appears to be drying out, remove it from the home as soon as possible.

Never leave flaming candles unattended. If you are going out or going to bed, extinguish the flame.

Never leave a fire in the fire place unattended. Allow time for the fire to burn itself out and leave the hot ashes in the firebox until the ashes have had at least a day to cool off. When removing the ashes, place them in a metal container to help prevent any re-ignition. If you are using your fire place, make sure the chimney has been inspected and cleaned if needed.

Do not overload electrical outlets. Make sure that the electrical system can handle the load. Also, make sure that extension cords do not run under rugs or under any furniture that could cause the cord to overheat.
Most of all, use common sense. If a problem does occur inside your home, do not hesitate, make sure everyone exits the home and call 911 from a neighbors house. The Members of Springfield Fire Company would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy and Fire Safe New Year!!
