Fire Strikes Morton Home Early Christmas Morning

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25th at 00:45 hours to assist Morton Fire Company (Company 11) in the 500 block of Highland Avenue for a House Fire.  Upon arrival of units from Morton Police, fire was showing from the front of a two story single family dwelling located directly across the street from Morton's Police and Fire Stations.  Morton Police, assisted by personnel from Medic 102 and Springfield Police rescued a paraplegic resident from inside the residence.

Engine 11-1 and Tower 44 arrived on location and started an interior attack on the fire located in the front of the house.  Firefighters from Company 13 (Rutledge) and Company 14 (Swarthmore) assisted on the first alarm along with Company 49 - RIT (Milmont).

Company 11 Command requested a second alarm assignment which dispatched Company 43 (Holmes), Company 18 (Folsom), Ladder 02 (Norwood), Engine 08 (Prospect Park), Air Bank 70 (Leedom), Rescue 52 (Brookhaven), Company 03 - RIT (Clifton Heights) and Canteen 47 (Chester Township).

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 1 hour and performed extensive salvage and overhaul operations.  EMS personnel transported several residents of the home to the hospital for smoke inhalation and one police officer was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Units remained on the scene for more than 3 hours.

Springfield Firefighters cleared the scene around 03:45 hours.

Media Fire Company (Company 23) and Rose Tree Fire Company (Company 73) provided stand by coverage at Station 44 during the fire.
