Fatal Accident on North Rolling Road

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Saturday, October 13th, around 00:52 hours for a Motor Vehicle Accident on North Rolling Road between Springfield Road and Scenic Road.  The County 911 center was receiving numerous 911 calls for a serious motor vehicle accident.  Upon arrival of Springfield Police and Chief 44-9B, two vehicles had collided head-on in the 200 block of North Rolling Road, with one vehicle striking a tree after the impact.  One vehicle was on fire and both drivers were heavily trapped inside their vehicles.

Chief 44-9B established Springfield Command and immediately called for a second heavy rescue company from Company 20 (Garrettford- Drexel Hill Fire Company).  Springfield Police used portable fire extinguishers on the one vehicle when  TAC 44 arrived on location and went into service with extinguishment of the fire and setting up for extrication operations.  Firefighters from TAC 44, Rescue 44, Utility 44 and Engine 44-4 worked on one trapped driver, while Firefighters from Rescue 20 worked on the second vehicle.

Firefighters from Company 44 worked with EMS personnel from Ambulance 44-7 and Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital) to free the one driver of the vehicle.  Engine 44-4 relocated to Halderman Field to set-up a Landing Zone for PennStar's medical helicopter.  Ambulance 44-7 transported to the Landing Zone and then had to redirect to Crozer Chester Medical Center.  The injuries sustained by the driver proved to be fatal.

The extrication of the second driver was stopped when medical personnel from Medic 103 (DCMH) pronounced the driver deceased on the scene.

Firefighters from Company 44 remained on the scene assisting Springfield Police and the Delaware County Medical Examiners Office with lighting and scene security until 03:07 hours.
