Firefighters Battle House Fire on South Highland Road Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Tuesday, January 30th, at 21:00 hours to the 200 block of South Highland Road for a House Fire. Upon arrival of Springfield Police and Chief 44-9, heavy smoke and fire was showing from the attic area of the one story house. Chief 44-9 established Springfield Command and Chief 44-9B was Operations Sector. Engine 44-1 arrived on scene and placed an 1 3/4" hose line into service inside the house. Firefighters from Tower 44 assisted the interior crew with a second 1 3/4" hose line and started ventilation operations on the roof, while crews from Engine 44-2 established a 5" water supply line to Engine 44-1. Firefighters from Rescue 44 and Engine 44-4 assisted on the scene with manpower. Firefighters had trouble reaching the main fire in the attic do to limited accessibility in the attic area. Firefighters pulled the ceiling in the kitchen area to expose the fire in the attic area and assisted with containing and extinguishing the attic fire. The fire originated in the kitchen area of the home. Firefighters were able to gain control of the fire and stop the fire from advancing any further in the attic area. The home sustained heavy fire damage in the attic area and moderate smoke and water damage to the first floor areas of the home. Firefighters from Rescue 43 (Holmes) stood by as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) and then were placed into service for manpower. Rescue 53 (Broomall) replaced Rescue 43 as the RIT on the fire ground. The fire is under investigation and appears to be accidental in nature. Units operating on the scene were: Engine 44-1, Tower 44, Engine 44-2, Rescue 44, Engine 44-4, Utility 44, Rescue 43 (RIT), Rescue 53 (RIT), Ambulance 44-7, Medic 106, Springfield Police and Fire Police. Clifton Heights Fire Company (Company 03) and Rescue 73 (Rose Tree) provided stand by coverage at Station 44 during the incident. |
