Vehicle into Utility Pole Sounds Familiar Springfield Firefighters are hearing a familiar dispatch in the past week. For three times within the last week, Springfield Fire Company has been dispatched to three different motor vehicle accidents involving a single automobile striking a utility pole. On Tuesday morning, February 21st, Springfield Fire Company was dispatched to the 500 block of West Springfield Road, in front of Halderman Field for a vehicle into the utility pole. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and firefighters controlled all hazards on the scene and notified PECO Energy to check the utility pole. On Monday afternoon, February 27th, Springfield Fire Company was dispatched to the 300 block of West Woodland Avenue, in the area of the Dairy Cottage, for a vehicle that struck a utility pole. The force of the impact snapped the pole at the base and moved the utility pole approximately 3 feet. The driver of the vehicle sustained very minor injuries. Electric power to the area was knocked out because of the accident and Route 420 was shut down until PECO Energy arrived on location and assessed the scene. Springfield Firefighters were called out for a third time early Wednesday morning, March 1st to the 400 block of Thatcher Road when residents were awaken from their sleep by the sound a vehicle crash in front of their homes and found a vehicle that had struck the utility pole. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported by Springfield Ambulance to the hospital for observation. Springfield Firefighters checked the scene for hazards and PECO Energy was again notified to respond because the force of the accident severely damaged the utility pole. All the drivers in each accident were very fortunate to sustain only minor injuries. Springfield Fire Company would like to remind residents that if you witness an accident involving utility poles and electrical equipment to stay clear of the area until the scene is determined to be safe by Fire Company personnel and PECO Energy. If you are involved in an accident with downed power lines or utility equipment it is best to stay inside the car until the scene is determined to be safe to exit your vehicle. |
