Springfield Firefighters Present for Congressman Weldon and Pay Respects to a Fallen Philadelphia Firefighter

Springfield Firefighters were kept busy on Saturday morning, February 4th, but not for emergency incidents.  Springfield Fire Company members attended a ceremony at Swarthmore Fire Company's firehouse to welcome our local U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), Vice Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and founder of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus.  Congressman Weldon was joined by fire companies from around Delaware County and Deputy U.S. Fire Administrator Charlie Dickinson to kick off the 2006 U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP).  The AFGP awards one-year grants directly to fire departments across the nation to support firefighters and the services they deliver. Congress appropriated, and President Bush signed into law, $655 million in direct assistance to first responders for the 2006 program.

Springfield's Tower 44 along with Tower 14 (Swarthmore) set-up in front of Swarthmore's firehouse with an American flag hung between the two trucks.

Springfield Firefighters also paid their respects to Firefighter Tracy Champion, Engine 54, of the Philadelphia Fire Department, who died in the line of duty while operating at fire scene in West Philadelphia on Saturday, January 25th.  Springfield Firefighters along with Firefighters from Clifton Heights Fire Company (Company 03) stood at attention on Baltimore Avenue in front of Fernwood Cemetery and saluted the casket of Firefighter Champion, carried on top of Engine 54, as the funeral procession passed by on the way to his final resting place in Fernwood Cemetery.
