Celebration for New Apparatus and 85 years of Service

Springfield Fire Company celebrated the addition of three new pieces of fire apparatus and 85 years of service to the residents of Springfield Township with a traditional housing ceremony on Saturday, September 24th.  Engine 44-1 (2004 Sutphen 2000 G.P.M. pumper), Rescue 44 (2005 Sutphen Heavy Rescue) and Utility 44 (2005 Ford F-350 Super Duty) were pushed into the firehouse three times by firefighters and EMT's from surrounding communities and by Springfield firefighters.

The tradition of the housing ceremony in the fire service is to celebrate the arrival of new fire apparatus in the community. The ceremonial pushing into the firehouse dates back to when fire apparatus was horse driven and much smaller than the modern apparatus of today.  The three pushes are to honor God, Country and the Fire Service.

Springfield Fire Company's master of ceremonies for the day was Springfield Township Fire Marshal Lee Fulton.  Chief Robert Woolson and President Edward Clapper spoke on behalf of the Fire Company and thanked the community for their 85 years of support to Springfield Fire Company.  Chief Woolson and President Clapper also thanked the membership of Springfield Fire Company for their dedication and commitment to the organization, the fire service and the community.

Over 20 fire companies from around Delaware County and even some representatives from Reamstown Fire Company, Lancaster County (present home of Springfield Fire Company's 1978 Sutphen Tower) were in attendance and helped with the housing ceremony.  During the housing ceremony, Springfield Fire Company dedicated Engine 44-1 in honor of Engineer Paul Schaum, for more than 40 years of "legendary" service to Springfield Fire Company on apparatus committees.

After the ceremony, Springfield Fire Company members, family and friends, fellow firefighters and residents enjoyed food and refreshments at the firehouse.  Springfield Fire Company would like to thank all the attendees who came out and helped celebrate the day with us at our home.

Springfield Fire Company would like Clifton Heights Fire Company and Holmes Fire Company for providing stand-by coverage at Station 44 during the ceremony.  Clifton Heights Fire Company handled a car fire and Holmes Fire Company handled an elevator rescue call.  Springfield Fire Company sends a special thank you to the Women of Springfield Fire Company for their excellent help during the day and the nice t-shirts that showed their pride in Springfield Fire Company.
