Midday Accident on East Springfield Road Entraps Passenger

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Tuesday, June 21st, at 13:11 hours to the 200 Block of East Springfield Road for an Accident with Entrapment.  Upon arrival of Chief 44-9 and TAC 44, one sport utility vehicle had struck the rear of a flatbed truck parked on the side of the road, trapping the front seat passenger inside the vehicle.

Firefighters from TAC 44 and Engine 44-4 stabilized the vehicle, started trauma assessment on the passenger and began extrication operations.  EMS personnel from Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital) and Ambulance 44-7 took over patient care and firefighters worked quickly to extricate the passenger.  Chief 44-9 had Rescue 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill) dispatched to assist at the scene since Rescue 44 is Out of Service.

Firefighters placed the Holmatro rescue tools into service to remove two doors on the passenger side of the vehicle, two support posts (A & B posts), and flipped the roof of the vehicle back to provide enough access to remove the passenger.  Firefighters also used the small hydraulic ram to lift the dash area of vehicle off the passenger  The passenger was extricated and removed to the ambulance within 20 minutes.  Medic 106 and Ambulance 44-7 transported the passenger to the landing zone across from the firehouse.  Engine 44-1 stood-by the landing zone at Springfield Volunteer Memorial Field.  Pennstar's medical helicopter transported the passenger to Crozer Chester Medical Center's Trauma Unit.

Ambulance 03-7 (Clifton Heights) and Medic 103-7B (DCMH) transported the driver of the vehicle to Crozer Chester Medical Center.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 14:10 hours.

Units operating on the incident were:  TAC 44, Engine 44-4, Engine 44-1, Rescue 20, Medic 106, Ambulance 44-7, Medic 103-7B, Ambulance 03-7, Springfield Police and Fire Police.
