Springfield Fire Company, along with Springfield Ambulance Corps, Springfield Police, Delaware County Medical Examiner's Officer, Springfield School District, Springfield High School and Delaware County Traffic Safety Division came together on Tuesday, May 3rd to help get the message out to Springfield High School students about the dangers of drinking and driving.  A two vehicle accident was staged in front of the High School on West Leamy Avenue to show the true impact of making the wrong choices when it comes to getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired.  Springfield High School students gathered at the accident scene to witness the tragic events unfold.

Emergency responders were presented with the challenge of extricating eight students from two vehicles that were involved in the accident in front of the main entrance to the High School.  Springfield Firefighters along with Springfield Ambulance Corps EMT's and Springfield Hospital Paramedic's (Medic 106 and Medic 106-9) extricated six students that were transported to local hospital with various levels of minor or critical injuries.  Springfield Police Department arrested the intoxicated driver that was responsible for the motor vehicle accident after he was extricated by Firefighters.

On a tragic note, one of the students that was in the vehicle driven by the intoxicated driver, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.  The Delaware County Medical Examiner was assisted by Springfield Firefighters in removing the deceased passenger from the vehicle.

All personnel involved hoped to get the message out to students that operating or riding in a motor vehicle with an impaired driver can often end in tragedy.  Enjoy the good times that being a High School student can bring, but remember to make the right choices so everyone goes home at the end of the night.

Swarthmore Fire Company provided stand-by coverage at Station 44 for Company 44 and Ambulance 44 during the event.
