Close Call for Family on Thanksgiving Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on alarm #04-898 on Thursday, November 25th, Thanksgiving Day at 2:22 pm for a House Fire in the 200 Block of Wells Lane. Upon arrival of Engine 44-1, there was a fire on the outside of the dwelling that destroyed a trash can and started to melt vinyl siding on the home. Firefighters from Engine 44-1 used a booster line to contain the fire, while firefighters from Engine 44-2 and Tower 44 checked the inside of the home for any possible fire extension. It was determined that the homeowner had cleaned out ashes from the fire place before the fire. When they were cleaning out the ashes inside the fire place, they discarded the ashes outside next to the house to close to combustible materials. The residents were very fortunate to notice the fire before it was to late. Springfield Fire Company would like to remind or educate all residents on the proper disposal of ashes from a fire place: 1. Let the ashes cool at least 24 hours before removing them from the fire place. 2. Place all the ashes inside a metal container with a metal lid to prevent reignition of the ashes. 3. Place the trash can away from combustible materials until disposal. Hopefully everyone can learn from this event and we can continue to help protect the citizens of Springfield Township from the damaging effects of fire. Firefighters remained on the scene until 2:52 pm. Units operating on the scene were: Engine 44-1, Engine 44-2, Engine 44-4, Tower 44, Rescue 44, Engine 11-1 (Morton), Tower 14 (Swarthmore), Engine 13-1 (Rutledge), Ambulance 44-7, Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital), Springfield Police and Fire Police. |
