VFW Honors Firefighter of the Year on Loyalty Day Springfield Fire Company Firefighter and Past Chief Edward Abel Sr. was honored as the Firefighter of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5705 at their 12th Annual Loyalty Day on Saturday, May 1st at the Springfield Township Municipal Building. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5705 honors a Firefighter, Police Officer and EMT of the Year for Springfield Township during their annual Loyalty Day ceremony. Firefighter Edward Abel Sr. was honored for his years of dedicated service to Springfield Fire Company. Firefighter Abel Sr. was Chief of the Fire Company from 1974 to 1982 and has held numerous positions within the Fire Company since first starting his service to Springfield Fire Company in August of 1963. Firefighter Abel Sr. has recently returned to active service with the Fire Company as a Driver / Pump Operator after his recent retirement from PECO Energy. Firefighter Abel Sr. also serves as a Trustee for the Fire Company. Captain Edward Abel Jr. spoke on behalf of the Fire Company to honor his father on being recognized as the Firefighter of the Year.
