Fire Prevention Open House 2003

Springfield Fire Company would like to thank all the citizens of Springfield Township who participated in the Fire Prevention Open House 2003.  The event has another huge success and the weather was perfect.  The annual event was held on Friday evening, October 10th, to coincide with National Fire Prevention Week.  The Open House allows the Members of Springfield Fire Company to get the message out about fire safety and prevention and to display the station and apparatus to the residents of the community.

Children were given the opportunity to practice Stop, Drop and Roll, and when completed successfully were given the chance to win a toy fire truck.  Fire Prevention Literature was distributed throughout the evening and videos were also being shown on Home Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Topics.  Refreshments were provided, which is always a favorite among the kids as well as the adults.

A live vehicle rescue demonstration was also performed by firefighters inside the firehouse.  Springfield Firefighters performed different vehicle extrication techniques using the rescue equipment on Rescue 44.  Residents were able to see the "Jaws of Life" and other hydraulic tools and rescue equipment.  Firefighters were able to demonstrate how they use these tools to remove people trapped inside an automobile after a serious accident.

Patches and Pumper were also in attendance this year.  The kids love seeing both of them every year at the Open House.  They usually steal the show, but the members of Springfield Fire Company don't mind because they are helping get the word out about fire prevention and fire safety.

The Home Fire Safety Demonstration conducted by Captain Keith Thomas was another big hit. Who knows how many fires have been prevented because of the valuable lessons learned in his demonstration year after year.  Showing how fires start and how unsafe practices in the home and at work can lead to fires, gives everyone in attendance the opportunity to experience these sometimes tragic acts without any harm to themselves or their home.

Springfield Ambulance Corps. also participated in the Open House.  Springfield Ambulance Corps. members were offering free blood pressure readings for anyone in attendance.

Fire Apparatus from neighboring companies were also on display in front of the fire house on Saxer Avenue.  Quint 03 from Clifton Heights Fire Company, Snorkel 53 from Broomall Fire Company, Squrt 23 from Media Fire Company, Water Rescue Unit 54 from Lenni Heights Fire Company, Antique Engine 14 from Swarthmore Fire Company, Utility Unit 43 from Holmes Fire Company and Tanker 59 from Concordville Fire Company were all on display to show residents the different types of fire apparatus in the county and apparatus that assists the members of Springfield Fire Company through out the year.

The Delaware County 911 Center had a Mobile Communications Vehicle on display.   This vehicle is used by emergency responders on large scale emergencies where communications is very important to the operation.  Delaware County 911 Dispatchers were also on hand to answer questions about the mobile communications vehicle and the 911 Center.

Springfield Fire Company would like to again thank all the residents that attended the 2003 Fire Prevention Open House.  Fire Prevention is a year long practice, Have a Fire Safe Year!  Always remember, When Fire Strikes, Get Out and Stay Out.
