Smoke Fills Old Central School

Picture 1

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on alarm #03-946 on Monday, December 15th, at 16:50 hours to 161 Saxer Avenue, Old Central School, for a Fire Alarm.  Upon of arrival of Springfield Police and Chief 44-9B, smoke was showing inside the school.  Engine 44-1 arrived on the scene and started searching for the source of the smoke.

Chief 44-9B had the call upgraded to a Building Fire which dispatched Company 74 (Primos Secane) and Company 03 (Clifton Heights).  Firefighters quickly located a small brush fire on the outside of the school and the smoke was entering the school through a basement ventilation window.  Chief 44-9B had the buidling fire assignment recalled and handled the call with Engine 44-1 and Engine 44-2.

A representative from the Parks Department arrived on the scene and provided access to the basement area of the school.  Firefighters from Engine 44-1 and Engine 44-2  checked the basement area for any fire extension and ventilated the school.  The school building did not sustain any damage by the fire.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 17:50 hours.

Units operating on the scene were:  Engine 44-1, Engine 44-2, Springfield Police and Fire Police.
