Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Alarm #03-579 on Wednesday, August 6th, at 08:42 hours to 729 South Chester Road for a Building Fire.  Swarthmore Fire Company was also dispatched on the call.  Upon arrival of Chief 44-9 and Chief 14-9 (Swarthmore) smoke was showing from inside the Cleaners and workers stated it was an electrical fire.

Firefighters from Engine 14-1 and Engine 44-1 checked the interior of the building while firefighters from Tower 14 checked the roof area.  PECO Energy workers were working were restoring electrical service to the shopping center when an electrical surge was sent into the Cleaners.  PECO Energy quickly shut down the power and secured the electrical equipment that they were working on in the rear.

The Swarthmore Cleaners sustained significant damage to the electrical system.  Firefighters checked for any possible fire extension and provided ventilation to remove the smoke from inside Swarthmore Cleaners.  Firefighters also checked neighboring businesses for any electrical problems.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 09:25 hours.

Units operating on the scene were:  Engine 14-1, Engine 44-1, Tower 14, Tower 44, Ambulance 44-7A, Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital), Springfield Police and Fire Police and Springfield Township's Fire Marshal (Car 1).
