Firefighters Attend Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Washington D.C.

Springfield Firefighters, along with members of Clifton Heights Fire Company, traveled to Washington D.C. on Sunday, October 6th for the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.  The service is organized each year by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The memorial service is held each year to honor those who gave died in the line of duty during the past year.  The service which is normally held each year at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the National Fire Academy in Emmittsburg, Maryland was moved to Washington D.C. this year to accommodate the larger attendance.

Springfield Firefighters stood at attention as part of the "Sea of Blue" with fellow firefighters from Pennsylvania and throughout the United States while the Procession of Honor made its way up 7th Street NW on the way to the MCI Center, site of the Memorial Service.

Springfield Firefighters paid their respects to the 446 firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.  The memorial service paid tribute to the 347 firefighters that lost their lives at the World Trade Center and also paid tribute to Richard D. Shoaf Jr., Swarthmore Fire Company, who lost his life in the line of duty while responding on a Medical Emergency call on August 18th, 2001.
