Month of July a Busy Month

Springfield Fire Company kept busy during the month of July.  The Month of July run statistics have been posted, check them out.

The month started off with the annual Fourth of July celebration.  The Fire Company participated in the Springfield Volunteer Memorial Ceremony at Volunteer Memorial Field by electing William F. Woolston III as the honoree from the Fire Company for 2002.  He is currently the President of the Fire Company and has held numerous positions within the organization.  The Fire Company was also proud to see many residents honoring Springfield's Firefighters and our nation's Emergency Services workers during the Fourth of July Parade.

The Fire Company kept busy during the holiday weekend.   Along with the Springfield Ambulance Corps, a Red Cross Blood Drive was held at the firehouse on Sunday, July 7th.  The Blood Drive was a huge success and was well supported by the membership and the residents of Springfield Township.  57 pints of blood were donated during the Blood Drive.  That represented 114% of the goal for the day.  Great Work!!  Keep posted for future blood drives.

Through out the month Springfield Firefighters were kept busy handling emergencies.  One call involved a Carbon Monoxide Emergency.   While most alarms of this type do seem to occur during the winter months, the possibility always exists for it to happen throughout the year.  Residents should always be aware of the dangers that carbon monoxide can cause in the home and make sure that all appliances inside the home are checked on a regular basis for proper function.   If a carbon monoxide alarm does activate, remove everyone from the home immediately and call 911.

Also during the month, a mishap occurred during an alarm.   While operating at the scene of a Brush Fire at 20 West Woodland Avenue on July 22, Engine 44-1 was struck by a vehicle while parked on the soccer fields of E.T. Richardson Middle School after assisting at the brush fire.  No one was injured during the mishap, but Engine 44-1 was placed Out of Service and had to return to Sutphen Corp. in Columbus, Ohio to be repaired.  Engine 44-1 is scheduled to return to service sometime in August.  The Fire Company is relying on Mutual Aid Agreements with surrounding Fire Companies to provide the additional assistance during this period.

The summer heat has been hitting us hard during the summer months, stay safe and stay cool and always remember to be Fire Safe.
