Chimney Fire Damages Home Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Wednesday, May 15th, at 19:40 hours for a Structure Fire at 1018 Capie Polk Drive. The fire was reported to be in the chimney. Upon arrival of Chief 44-9, smoke was showing from the wall area around the chimney on the outside of the structure. Engine 44-1 went into service an 1 3/4" hoseline and the Thermal Imaging Camera inside the residence to start checking the walls and chimney area for any fire. A smoke condition was present on the second floor of the home. Firefighters from Tower 44 laddered the the chimney side of the home and checked the roof area of the building. Engine 44-2 stood-by at the hydrant at Lincoln Avenue and Capie Polk Drive. Firefighters opened up a wall on the second floor to check for fire extension. Firefighters also checked the attic area of the home. With high heat still present in the bricks around the fireplace on the first floor, firefighters removed the brick veneer fireplace to find wood burning behind the veneer. The entire brick veneer fireplace had to be removed to extinguish the smoldering materials behind the veneer. Firefighters ventilated the structure and performed salvage operations on the first floor and again checked the residence with the thermal imaging camera. Firefighters remained on the scene until 21:40 hours. Units operating on the scene were: Engine 44-1, Tower 44, Engine 44-2, Rescue 44, Ambulance 44-7, Medic 106, Springfield Police and Fire Police, and Springfield Township Fire Marshal.
