Oil Delivery Truck Overturns in Upper Providence Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on April 9th, at 12:22 hours to assist Rose Tree Fire Company (Company 73) at the scene of an overturned oil delivery truck. The accident occurred on Old State Road below Route 1 (Media By-Pass). The the driver of the oil truck, owned by Boyle Oil Company of Havertown, PA, lost control the vehicle while approaching the curve before the underpass along Old State Road causing the vehicle to overturn. Upon arrival of initial units from Company 73, the driver of the vehicle was not trapped, but required medical attention. Firefighters from Company 73 and Company 23 (Media) worked to contain the oil leaking from the tank truck while medical personnel from Ambulance 23-7 transported the driver to the hospital. Company 73 Command requested additional manpower to help with the oil spill. Company 44 and Company 51 (South Media) were dispatched to assist and Canteen 47 (Feltonville) was also dispatched to the scene. With the accident scene being close to Crum Creek and the oil was running into a stream that lead into Crum Creek, Philadelphia Suburban Water Company was notified and responded. Firefighters used absorbent materials and with the help of a Bobcat Loader made a dam in the small creek to block the flow of any oil into Crum Creek. Boyle Oil Company provided another vehicle to off load the remaining oil in the overturned truck. The coordinated effort of everyone involved prevented any major environmental damage from the spill. Assisting units remained on the scene until 16:00 hours. Company 73 stood by until the incident was mitigated. Companies operating on the scene were: Company 73, Company 23, Company 44, Company 51, Canteen 47, Upper Providence Police, Sixth District Fire Police, and PennDOT. |
