FIRE DESTROYS BUILDING AT SPRINGFIELD SWIM CLUB

Tragedy strikes the Springfield Swim Club once again.  After suffering major damage from flood waters caused by Hurricane Floyd, the Springfield Swim Club community finds itself once again facing another setback, this time by fire.scc2.jpg (42821 bytes)

The Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Saturday, January 15th, at 23:23 hours to the Springfield Swim Club for a Structure Fire.   The Delaware County 911 Center had received numerous calls on the fire before units were responding.  Upon arrival of Springfield Police and 44-9 (Springfield Fire Chief Woolson) they confirmed that the Office and Snack Bar Building at the Main Entrance to the Swim Club was fully involved with fire and that the two story Locker Room Building next to this structure was endangered by the radiant heat from the well advancing fire.

44-9 established Springfield Incident Command and gave orders to all incoming units.  44-9A was the Operations Officer.scc1.jpg (31728 bytes)

Crews from 44-1 starting laying a 5" Supply Line down the driveway upon arrival and went in service with a 1 3/4" hoseline to protect the exposure building (Locker Room Building) and start attacking some of the fire in the Office Area.

44-9 called for the second alarm which brought firefighters from Clifton Heights Fire Company (Company 03) and the Air Bank from Brookhaven Fire Company.

44-2 finished laying the 5" Supply Line out to North Rolling Road and established the water supply into the fire scene.  Tower 44 and Rescue 44 proceeded into the scene along with Quint 03 and Ambulance Units 44-7 and 03-7.scc3.jpg (52280 bytes)

44-9 had Tower 44 and Quint 03 go into service with Ladder Pipe Operations to knock down all fire in the Building.

Company 44 and Company 03 crews overhauled the building once the Ladder Pipe Operation was stopped.

The Office and Snack Bar Building was a total loss, but firefighters did manage to save the Locker Room Building from catching fire from the radiant heat.

The Springfield Fire Marshal and State Police Fire Investigator were called in to investigate the fire and it has been labeled suspicious in nature and is still under investigation.

Units responding to the fire scene were: Engine 44-1, Engine 44-2, Tower 44, Rescue 44, Quint 03, Engine 03-2, Ambulance 44-7, Ambulance 03-7, Medic 106, Rescue 52, Springfield Police and Springfield Fire Police.   Garrettford-Drexel Hill Fire Company was dispatched to the area of the Drexel Line Shopping Center to make sure that no embers from the fire caused any problems in that area.  Media Fire Company provided stand by coverage at Station 44.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 03:23 hours.
