Firefighters Sharpen Skills Using Homes on West Rolling Road

The 6 homes on West Rolling Road that were heavily damaged by Hurricane Floyd in September 1999 provided the firefighters of Springfield Fire Company with some valuable training opportunities.  The homes were bought by the federal government as part of an on going plan to remove properties from flood prone areas.  The homes were then turned over to Springfield Township for demolition and to be preserved as open land.

Springfield Fire Company approached the township with the idea of allowing the firefighters to practice different skills using the homes.   The township was very receptive of the idea and allowed the Company to train on certain properties and areas of the homes.

The training that was conducted during two consecutive Tuesday night training sessions included:  Ground Ladders, Roof Ventilation, Aerial Tower Operations, Window Venting, Firefighter Safety and Survival, Overhaul Operations, and Forcible Entry.

From the tragedy of Hurricane Floyd came some valuable experience and training that will help Springfield Fire Company and the residents of Springfield Township for many years to come.
