Car Accident and Fire Kills One on I-476 Springfield Fire Company was dispatched with Broomall Fire Company to I-476 Southbound at Mile Marker 5.6 early Saturday morning at 03:37 hours for a Motor Vehicle Accident with a Vehicle on Fire. Upon arrival of first in units one vehicle was overturned and fully involved in fire. TAC-44 and Engine 53-3 (Broomall) handled the Vehicle Fire, while Medical personnel from Ambulance 44-7A (Springfield), Ambulance 53-7 (Marple), Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital) and Medic 108A (Mercy Haverford) administered care to the patients from the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger of the vehicle was treated for minor injuries and transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center by 44-7A and Medic 106. Eyewitness accounts stated that the vehicle had side-swiped a car and lost control, rolling over numerous times before coming to a rest in the middle of the southbound lanes of I-476. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle and the passenger removed himself from the vehicle after it had come to a rest. Bystanders at the scene moved the two victims away from the vehicle when it caught fire. The accident is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police. Units remained on the scene until the vehicle was removed from the highway and the County Coroner had handled the deceased driver. Units operating at the scene were: TAC-44, Rescue 44, Engine 53-3, Rescue 53, Ambulance 44-7A, Ambulance 53-7, Medic 106, Medic 108A, Marple Police, Pennsylvania State Police and Local Fire Police. |
