Fire Damages Dwelling on Homestead Avenuehomestead2.jpg (506372 bytes)

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched around 22:00 hours on Sunday, June 18th in the area behind the Stanley Cup Bar on Baltimore Pike for a Structure Fire.  Numerous calls were received by the dispatcher at the Springfield Police Department.  Upon arrival of Springfield Police and Fire Chief Robert Woolson, heavy fire was showing from the first floor of the structure at 814 Homestead Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters from Engine 44-1 started attacking the fire with a 2 1/2" handline to knock down the large amount of fire involving the first floor.  Firefightershomestead3.jpg (189319 bytes) then started an interior attack with an 1 3/4" handline.  Tower 44 laid a 5" supply line to Engine 44-1 and set-up in front of the building.  Crews from Tower 44, ventilated the second floor and roof area and assisted with a second 1 3/4" handline.   Crews from Quint 03 and Rescue 58 assisted with laddering the structure and ventilation.  Crews from Engine 44-2 and Rescue 44 assisted the crews from Engine 44-1 and Tower 44.

Chief Robert Woolson requested a second alarm assignment which brought firefighters from Clifton Heights Fire Company, Bon Air Fire Company Air Bank and the Friendship Fire Company Canteen.

homestead4.jpg (170380 bytes)Initial reports stated that a subject was possibly trapped inside the building and crews started searching the residence during their initial attack on the fire.  It was quickly determined that no one was inside the home and crews continued to work on controlling the fire.  The fire was difficult to extinguish due to a large amount of combustible products inside the dwelling.  For a brief time exterior operations were initiated to control the fire.

The fire was brought under control within an hour and crews remained on the scene until 01:00 hours.

Assisting Springfield Fire Company at the scene was:  Springfield Ambulance, Clifton Heights Fire Company, Bon Air Fire Company, Springfield Police and Fire Police, Springfield Hospital Medic 106, Friendship Fire Company Canteen and DCMH Medic 1037B.

Firefighters from Media Fire Company and Rose Tree Fire Company stood by at Springfield's Firehouse during the incident.
