Two Washington D.C. Firefighters Die Anthony Phillips, 30, of Engine 10, and Lewis J. Matthews, 29, of Engine 26, Washington D.C. Fire Department were killed in the line of duty Sunday morning, May 30, while operating at the scene of a house fire in the Northeast Section of the City. The fire hits close to home for Springfield Fire Company members, because two of our own were operating at the fire scene. Joseph "Ozzie" Myers, the driver for Engine 10 and Lt. James Vlasspoulos of Engine 24 were working the 3 Platoon Shift when this tragedy occurred. Driver Myers and Lt Vlasspoulos are both members of Springfield Fire Company and past active members of the Company. The Springfield Fire Company would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Anthony Phillips and Lewis J. Matthews and all D.C.F.D. firefighters during this difficult time.
