Dump Truck Fire Closes I-476

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Thursday, December 17th, at 11:00 hours, to assist South Media Fire Company (Company 51) on Interstate 476 at Mile Marker 2.4, Nether Providence Township.  Company 51 and Company 65 (Garden City) were on the scene of a dump truck accident and fire.  A dump truck that was traveling Northbound lost control around Mile Marker 2.4 and hit the guiderail in the center median, bursting into flames.  The driver of the vehicle received only minor injuries.

Companies worked to control the fire and also monitored the surrounding areas for any environmental hazards that may have been created by the accident and fire.  EMS personnel treated the injured driver and stood by on the scene until the incident was under control.  Firefighters from Engine 44-1 and Squad 44 assisted on the fireground with water supply and manpower.

Interstate 476 was shut down in both directions for over 3 hours until the incident was brought under control.  Springfield Firefighters operated on the scene until 13:30 hours.

Companies operating on the scene were:  Company 51, Company 65, Company 67 (Woodlyn), Company 14 (Swarthmore), Company 23 (Media), Tanker 59 (Concordville), Crash Unit 79-2 (Boeing), Pennsylvania State Police and Delaware County Fire Police.
