Assist to Clifton Heights on Accident with Entrapment

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Wednesday, December 2nd, at 00:38 hours, to assist Company 03 (Clifton Heights) on an Accident with Entrapment at Baltimore Pike and Oak Avenue.  Company 03 and Company 19 were already working on the scene of the crash when Company 03 Command requested the next due Rescue Company due to heavy entrapment.

Rescue 44 arrived on location and set-up equipment to support the rescue operation.  One vehicle had struck a pole on the driver's side door, heavily entrapping the driver.  Firefighters from Company 03 and Company 19 had little access on the driver's side due to the utility pole that the vehicle struck.  Rescue Officers decided to use the winch from Rescue 44 to pull the vehicle away from the pole to have better access for operations.  Once the vehicle was moved and restabilized, firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to free the driver who was trapped between the driver's door and center console of the vehicle.

Firefighters were successful in gaining enough space to allow for extrication of the driver.  Firefighters worked with EMS personnel to extricate the driver onto a backboard thru the rear area of the vehicle.  The driver was extricated and transported to trauma center within 1 hour.  A passenger in the vehicle was also treated by EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital.

Firefighters from Company 44 remained on the scene until 01:23 hours.

Units operating on the scene were:  Engine 03-1, Engine 03-2, Rescue 19, Engine 19, Rescue 44, Engine 44-4, Utility 03, Medic 103, Medic 103-7, Ambulance 03-7, Ambulance 19-7 and Clifton Heights Police.
