Vehicle Hangs Over Creek with Entrapment

Springfield Firefighters responded to a Motor Vehicle Accident with Entrapment on Wednesday morning, October 14th, at 08:03 hours, in the 400 Block of West Woodland Avenue. Upon arrival of Chief 44-9 and Springfield Police, there was a two vehicle accident with both driver's trapped inside their vehicles. One vehicle was also hanging over a creek that runs along side of West Woodland Avenue.
Firefighters from Engine 44-4 quickly stabilized one vehicle and started extrication of the driver. Firefighters from Rescue 44 assisted with the extrication. Firefighters assisted EMS personnel from Ambulance 44-7 and Medic 106 with removing the driver.
Once complete, firefighters worked to stabilize the vehicle that was hanging over the creek. Firefighters used cribbing and the Junkyard Dog rescue struts to start stabliziing the vehicle. Firefighters from Rescue 73 and Rescue 53 assisted with the operation and also secured a rescue chain from a guide rail on the side of the road to the front of the vehicle to provide more stabilization of the vehicle. Once this operation was completed, firefighters from Company 44 removed the driver's side door of the vehicle to allow for removal of the driver.
Firefighters completed both extrications within 30 minutes and firefighters from Engine 44-4 stood by on location until the one vehicle was removed from the creek area.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 09:03 hours.
Units operating on the scene were: Engine 44-4, Rescue 44, Utility 44, Ambulance 44-7, Medic 106, Ambulance 44-7A, Medic 103, Rescue 73, Rescue 53, Springfield Police and Fire Police. Ambulance and Medic 23 stood by at Station 44 during the incident.
