Methane Gas Leak Causes Springfield Mall Evacuation

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Saturday, September, 20th at 11:37 hours to the Springfield Mall, 1250 Baltimore Pike, for a Gas Leak inside the Borders Book Store. Upon arrival of Chief 44-9 and 44-9B a strong odor of methane gas was found in the area of the store caused by a broken sewer vent.
Chief 44-9 and Springfield Township Fire Marshall (Car 1) ordered the evacuation of the Mall Complex. Springfield firefighters started ventilation of the Mall and were assisted at the scene by Companies 03 (Clifton Heights), 14 (Swarthmore), 23 (Media), and 47 (Feltonville - Canteen Unit). Company 12 (Eddystone) was special called to the scene with Hovercraft 12 to assist with ventilation.
Three patients were transported to the hospital by EMS units for evaluation. Springfield Township's Code Enforcement Department and the Health Department were notified.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 14:52 hours.
Companies 11 (Morton), 13 (Rutledge) and 43 (Holmes) provided stand by coverage at Station 44 during the incident.
