Carbon Monoxide Problem due to Portable Generator

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Monday, August 29th, at 0911 hours, to 642 Baltimore Pike for a Buildling Fire.  Medic 75-7 (Briarcliffe) was responding on an emergency when they saw smoke coming from a buildling next to the Best Buy store.  Upon arrival of Chief 44-9 and Springfield Police, smoke was showing from the basement of 624 Baltimore Pike.  The smoke was coming from a portable generator being used in an outside basement stairwell to provide power to one of the businesses still effected by the power outage from Hurricane Irene.

Firefighters from Engine 44-1 and Tower 44 secured the generator and started ventilation of the building.  Firefighters encountered high Carbon Monoxide (CO) readings inside the building.  Firefighters from Ladder 43 assisted with manpower on the scene.

Firefighters remained on the scene for over an hour performing ventilation and checking all the effected businesses for CO levels.

Quint 03 provided stand by coverage at Station 44 during the incident.

Due to the power outages from Hurricane Irene, Springfield Fire Company would like to remind residents and business owners to follow all manufacturer's operating instructions when using portable generators.
