| With images of Hurricane Floyd in 1999 still in the minds of many, Springfield Firefighters prepared for similiar conditions with the arrival of Hurricane Irene on Saturday, August 27th into Sunday, August 28th. Emergency responders started answering calls associated with Hurricane Irene in the early evening on Saturday, with the storm really packing a bunch between 9pm and 11pm Saturday night and then again around 1am to 3am Sunday morning.
Springfield Firefighters handled numerous emergencies from wires and trees down, Building Fires, Trees into Houses, Motor Vehicle Accidents and Hazardous Conditons with flooded basements. In a 24 hour period, Springfield Firefighters handled over 50 emergency calls. The areas most effected by the storm were the neighborhoods along Darby Creek, especially in the area of West Rolling Road and Doe Run Lane.
An Emergency Operations Center was set-up at the Springfield Firehouse and was staffed by personnel from Springfield Fire Company, Springfield Police Department and the Springfield Township Office of Emergency Management.
Springfield Township and the surrounding areas were hit with a significant amount of rain, but were spared from the high winds that were forecasted for the Hurricane Irene.
