House Fire During Nighttime Storm

While most Springfield residents were being awaken in the middle of the night by a severe storm rolling thru the area, Springfield Firefighters were responding, at 0239 hours, to the 100 Block of South Norwinden Drive for a Dwelling Fire.  Upon arrival of Chief 44-9A and Springfield Police, there was fire showing from the rear of a two story dwelling.  The lone resident of the home was outside the residence upon there arrival.  Chief 44-9 established Springfield Command and Chief 44-9A had Operations.

Engine 44-1 arrived on location and placed an 2 1/2" hose line into service on the first floor.  Firefighters from Tower 44 laddering the home and started ventilation operations.  Firefighters from Tower 44, Engine 44-4 and Rescue 20 pulled additional  1 3/4" hose lines off Engine 44-1 and placed them into service on the first and second floors of the home.

Command requested Company 03 and the next due RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) Company which dispatched Company 43 for Rescue 43.

Firefighters were quickly able to control the fire on the first floor but the fire had already spread up into the attic of the home thru the exterior.  Firefighters from Tower 44 performed vertical ventilation of the attic area while firefighters advanced an 1 3/4" hose line from the second floor into the attic space.

Firefighter rehab was established by EMS personnel from Ambulance 44-7 and Medic 106 and Canteen 47 (Feltonville) provided additional refreshments for the responders.

Firefighters remained on the scene after 0600 hours performing extensive overhaul and assisting Springfield Township Fire Marshal's Office with the investigation.

Units operating on the scene were:  Engine 44-1, Tower 44, Engine 44-4, Rescue 44, Rescue 20, Quint 03, Engine 03-1, Rescue 43, Ambulance 44-7, Ambulance 03-7, Medic 106, Canteen 47, Springfield Police and Fire Police.

Engine 58 (Bon Air), Rescue 56 (Manoa) and Tower 34 (Llanerch) provided stand-by coverage at Station 44 during the incident.
