Springfield vs. Bon Air in Softball
|
In a classic battle of backyard sand lot softball, the Members from Springfield challenged the new comers to the annual softball series, Bon Air Fire Company. With high stakes on the line, both teams assembled their "A" teams or close to it, to represent their organization in the battle for bragging rights for one year.
With some members not being able to participate due to possible trade offers with the Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays, the Firefighters from Springfield took the field in defense of their home field, Volunteer Memorial Field.
The game early on turned out to be an offensive on slaught by the Bombers from Springfield, while the shell shocked players from Haverford Township struggled to keep pace. With a Nolan Ryan like performance being displayed on the mound by the pitching staff from Company 44, the Bon Air faithful were just hoping to keep it a respectful game.
With the game slowly getting out of reach, the Springfield bench started to sip the championship champagne a little to soon. The Bon Air bats came alive in the late innings with a Philadelphia Phillies-like come from behind performance. After a visit to the mound from the Springfield Pitching Staff, the players got back into form and sealed the deal.
In a game for the ages, the Splended Splinters from Springfield fought off the Bon Air Arsenal to win 12-10, or 12-9, or 13-10. The exact score is still in question due to mechanical problems with the scoreboard equipment.
After the game, both squads were treated to refreshments and a post game recap by ESPN at Station 44. After the game, the fate of a few players considered in the trade rumors was still not known. Stay tuned for further developments.
