Gas Leak at Construction Site

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Tuesday, July 28th at 12:58 hours to 721 West Sproul Road for a Natural Gas Leak.  Upon arrival of Chief 44-9, there was an active leak from a medium pressure gas main on the site of the Old Value City Department store.  Demolition contractors had hit an unmarked natural gas line while digging at the site.

Engine 44-1 arrived on location and established a water supply from a hydrant on the West Woodland Avenue side of the property.  Firefighters from Engine 44-1 stretched an 1 3/4" hose line and stood by while crews from PECO Energy entered the trench and secured the gas leak.

Once the leak was secured, the site was turned back over to the demolition contractors.  Firefighters remained on the scene until 13:58 hours.

Units operating on the scene were:  Engine 44-1, Tower 44, Engine 44-4, Ambulance 23-7, Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital), Springfield Police and Fire Police.
