Trash Truck Rollover with Entrapment

On Tuesday, July 26th, Springfield Fire Company was dispatched at 1049 hours to assist Company 53 (Broomall) on Reed Road at Marpit Road for an Accident with Entrapment.  A Upper Darby Township Public Works trash truck had rolled over while making a turn onto Marpit Road and landed on top of a vehicle that was stopped at the intersection.  The crash heavily trapped the driver of the passenger car.

Due to off duty emergency services personnel witnessing the accident, 911 calls to the County 911 had detailed information to the serverity of the incident which dispatched a major accident response.  Company 53, Company 44 and Company 56 (Manoa) were all dispatched for the Rescue assignment along with EMS personnel.  Company 58 (Bon Air) handled the Landing Zone assignment.

Chief 53-9 also had a heavy wrecker (tow truck) dispatched on the assignment which brought Dean Keyes Towing to the scene.

Firefighters worked to gain assess to the trapped driver so that medical personnel could stabilize the injured driver.  Firefighters initially set-up for lifting operations, but the decision was made to have the tow truck lift the trash truck off the vehicle.

Once this operation was successful, rescue personnel quickly extricated the driver and assisted EMS personnel with removing the driver.  EMS transported the driver to the awaiting helicopter which transported the subject to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

While Springfield Firefighters operated on the scene, Collingdale Fire Company #1 provided an Engine to cover Station 44 during the incident.

Springfield Firefighters operated on the scene for approximately two hours before being released by 53 Command.
