Van and Tractor Trailer Collide on Interchange 5 of I476

| Springfield Fire Company was dispatched with units from Company 73 (Rose Tree) and Company 53 (Broomall) to Exit 5 of I-476 on Thursday, July 16th, at 15:32 hours for a Motor Vehicle Accident with Entrapment. Chief 44-9B arrived on location with a two vehicle accident, involving a van and a tractor trailer, with one driver trapped inside the wreckage.
Chief 44-9B established I-476 Command and had Firefighters from Rescue 73, Engine 44-4, Rescue 53 and Rescue 44 stabilize the vehicles and go into service with rescue operations on the trapped driver. Firefighters had to cut thru a guide rail that was up against the drivers side door of the van before using the Homaltro Rescue tools to open the door to gain access to the driver.
The driver was extricated from the vehicle within 20 minutes and EMS personnel from Ambulance 53-7 and Medic 53 transported the subject to Crozer Chester Medical Center's Trauma Unit. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the accident.
Firefighters from Engine 44-4 stood by on the scene until the vehicle were removed. The accident is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police.
