Electrical Surge Damages Home
|
Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Wednesday, July th at 21:05 hours to the 700 Block of Timber Trail Lane for a Building Fire Investigation. Chief 44-9B arrived on location and was advised by homeowners that there was an electrical surge that effected the neighborhood earlier in the day and damaged an electrical outlet in the kitchen of their home.
Firefighters from Engine 44-1 checked the kitchen area with Thermal Imaging Cameras and detected heat inside the wall around the damaged electrical outlet. Firefighters opened up the wall and found damaged wiring and burnt wall studs. Firefighters from Tower 44 assisted with checking for any fire extension to the second floor.
Firefighters from Engine 44-4 checked electrical panel boxes and electric meters of other homes around the effected residence, to make sure the power surge did not effect their houses.
The electric surge may have been caused by contractors working in the area installing new underground communications cable. The installation crew possibly hit an underground electric line causing the surge.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 22:50 hours.
Units operating on the scene were: Engine 44-1, Tower 44, Engine 44-4, Ambulance 44-7, Medic 106, Springfield Police, Fire Police and PECO Energy representatives.
