The Springfield Volunteer Memorial, a nonprofit organization made up of 11 volunteer member organizations, promotes and recognizes community service within Springfield Township by honoring exemplary volunteers each year. On Monday, July 5th, as part of the Township Fourth of July festivities, the names of two Springfield Fire Company members were placed on the Volunteer Memorial Wall along with the honorees from the other volunteer organizations. To be nominated, one must have performed exemplary volunteer service for the benefit of the Springfield Community as a member of one of the volunteer organizations for a minimum of 10 years.
The two individuals honored this year were Past Chief Edward J. Abel Sr. and Captain Keith D.Thomas. Both members joined the Fire Company during the 1960's. Edward J. Abel Sr. served as the Chief of the Fire Company from 1974 thru 1982 and Captain Keith Thomas held the position of Deputy Chief and Assistant Chief during the 1980's, 1990's and 2000's. Both men have been active within the Fire Company for over 30 years respectively and currently hold positions within the Fire Company.
The awards were presented by Past Chief John F. Gallagher, the current representative for the Fire Company on the Springfield Volunteer Memorial Committee and also a past honoree on the Volunteer Memorial Wall.
The Members of Springfield Fire Company congratulate Past Chief Edward J. Abel Sr. and Captain Keith D. Thomas on being the 2010 honorees to the Springfield Volunteer Memorial Wall. Their continued devotion to Springfield Fire Company and the citizens of Springfield Township are in keeping with the highest traditions of Springfield Fire Company, the Fire Service and show the true meaning of the Fire Company Motto of "Ad Serviendum Dedicatus" (Dedicated to Serving).
