Passing of Past Police Chief George W. Hill

The Membership of Springfield Fire Company offers their condolences to the Springfield Police Department and the Hill Family on the passing of Past Police Chief George W. Hill.
Chief Hill, 82, of Springfield, died May 19 at Springfield Hospital. Chief Hill was appointed to the Springfield Police Department in 1955. He served as Police Chief from 1975-1988. Chief Hill was also the Superintendent of the Delaware County prison from 1992 until his retirement in 2008. The facility now bears his name, George W. Hill Coorectional Facility, in Thornbury.
An Army veteran, Mr. Hill was active in many police and civic associations and served on various boards and committees.
In 1981 Mr. Hill joined the Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund, where he served as president from 1991 until 2008.
In 1995, Mr. Hill was presented the William G. Weidner Memorial Award by the Delaware County Police Chiefs Association for his volunteer work as an official of the Delaware County Hero Scholarship Fund that raises money to pay educational expenses of children of police officers and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
He was the widower of Wanda H. Kacprzyk Hill, who died in 2008.
Mr. Hill was the son of the late Marie Hill Holloway and Clarence Hill and the brother of the late Marie Hill Walsh Billingsley.
Survivors: Daughter, Diane M. Price of Springfield; son, Thomas M. Matys of the Garnet Valley section of Bethel; sister, Helen Hill Jensen of Downingtown, Chester County; brother, Sam Hill of Swarthmore; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Francis of Assisi Church, 136 Saxer Ave., Springfield.
Visitation: 6 p.m. Tuesday, O’Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Road, Springfield.
