|
Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Sunday, May 9th at 1518 hours to 2 East Springfield Road, Victory Cleaners for a Building Fire. County 911 advised responding units that they were receiving numerous calls for the fire. Chief 44-9B arrived on location with smoke showing from the two story commercial building.
Chief 44-9 established Springfield Command while Engine 44-1 laid a 5" supply line from a hydrant in the 100 block of East Springfield Road to the front of the building. Firefighters from 44-1 stretched an 1 3/4" hose line and forced entry into the first floor of the cleaners and encountered heavy smoke conditions but no visible fire. Tower 44 arrived on location and positioned in the front parking lot. Firefighters from Tower 44 vented the second floor windows and then laddered the roof with Tower 44. Once the second floor was ventilated, visible fire could be seen on the second floor near the front of the building.
Firefighters had a difficult accessing the second floor due to no interior stairs. Firefighters placed a 14' ladder to the second floor from the interior while firefighters opened up the roof. The fire was quickly contained to the second floor area with some minor extension into the roof area.
Firefighters from Engine 44-4 and Rescue 44 assisted with manpower on the fire ground. Firefighters from Rescue 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill) and Rescue 43 (Holmes) stood by as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) during the incident.
Firefighters performed extensive overhaul operations checking for any fire extension within the walls. Firefighters assisted the Fire Marshal with the investigation.
Firefighters remained on the scene until 1718 hours.
Units operating on the scene were: Engine 44-1, Tower 44, Engine 44-4, Rescue 44, Ambulance 44-7, Medic 106 (Springfield Hospital), Rescue 20, Rescue 43, Springfield Police, Fire Police, Springfield Township Fire Marshal's Office and assistance from Media Borough Fire Marshal's Office. Squrt 43 and Rescue 43, once released from the scene, provided stand-by coverage at Station 44 during the incident. The cover assignment handled one emergency for a Carbon Monoxide Alarm during the stand-by.
