Midnight House Fire in Rutledge Borough

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on the Box Alarm assignment late Monday night, April 18th, to the Unit Block of President Avenue, Rutledge Borough, for the Dwelling Fire. Chief 44-9A arrived on location with a 3 story wood frame dwelling with fire showing from the 3rd Floor (Division 3). Engine 13-1 (Rutledge) laid a 5" supply line into the scene and starting stretching a 2 1/2" hose line, while Firefighters from Tower 44, Tower 14 (Swarthmore) and Engine 44-4 started laddering the structure and initiated ventilation operations. As firefighters were making their initial attack on the 3rd floor, Engine 13-1 encountered water supply issues and hose lines from Tower 44 and Tower 14 where placed into service.
The evacuation tones were sounded when an adequate water supply could not be maintained for interior hose lines. Firefighters went into a defensive operation from the exterior and knocked down most of the visible fire on the 3rd floor. Once the water supply was reestablished, Firefighters reentered the structure and worked to gain control of the fire on the third floor.
Firefighters were able to gain the upper hand on the fire and had to perform extensive overhaul operations to open up walls and ceilings inside the dwelling to extinguish fire throughout the third floor and some drop down fire into the 1st and 2nd floors. Salvage operations were also performed inside the residence.
Firefighters from Company 13, Company 14, Company 44, Company 43 (Holmes), Company 08 RIT (Prospect Park), Company 03 RIT (Clifton Heights), worked on the fire scene for over 3 hours. Additional manpower from Company 70 (Leedom), Company 18 (Folsom), Company 56 (Manoa) assisted on the scene along with numerous EMS units and Canteen 47 (Feltonville).
Firefighters from Company 44 cleared the scene around 0330 hours.
