Electrical Fire Smokes up Rosario's

Springfield Fire Company was dispatched on Thursday evening, February 11th, at 19:18 hours, along with Company 11/13 (Morton-Rutledge), Company 14 and Company 08 (Prospect Park - RIT), to the Unit Block of South Morton Avenue in Morton Borough for the Building Fire.  Upon arrival of Morton PD, heavy smoke was showing the front basement area of the Rosario's Restaurant, 13 South Morton Avenue.

Tower 44 arrived on location with Engine 08 (RIT) and stretched an 1 3/4" hose line to the front of the building.  An exterior basement access was quickly opening by Firefighters from Engine 08 and heavy smoke was showing.  Firefighters could hear electrical equipment arcing inside this basement area.  Firefighters from Tower 44 proceeded to force entry into the restaurant and advanced the 1 3/4" hose line to the basement area.

The fire was isolated to the exterior basement utility access.  Firefighters were evacuated from the building due to a strong odor of natural gas inside the building.  Firefighters from all four companies evacuated the apartments above the commercial properties and waited for PECO Energy to secure the electric and gas to the building.

Once all utilities were secured, firefighters ventilated the structure.

While this incident was being dealt with, Firefighters and EMS had to handle another incident.  A vehicle was struck by a westbound R3 commuter rail train at the Route 420 railroad crossing.  The driver of the vehicle got the car struck on the grade crossing and upon seeing the train approaching, exited the vehicle before it was struck by the train.  There were no injuries on the train.

Firefighters from Company 44 remained on the scene on South Morton Avenue until 21:48 hours.
