Springfield Firefighters have once again been manning the firehouse during a major winter storm. The Delaware Valley seems to have relocated to the Colorado Rockies. Springfield Firefighters have maintained crews at the station during all three snow storms and have been able to handle all the emergencies in a timely manner. During this recent round of snow, Firefighters have answered calls ranging from Wires Down, Accidents, a Building Fire in Media and checking on residents without power.
While returning from a response into Media Borough, there was a guest at the firehouse upon our return. Stephen Scott, a Firefighter from the Portland Fire Department (Oregon) Engine 20, stopped by the station during the storm after being snowed in at the Philadelphia Airport. Firefighter Scott was attempting to get to Haiti as part of a relief effort. After some flight delays and problems with connections, he found himself stuck in the Philadelphia International Airport. He decided to get a room at the Days Inn on Baltimore Pike and decided to stop by the firehouse when he saw Springfield apparatus out on the street during the storm. Springfield Firefighters gave him a tour of the fire station and some relaxation in the TV room during emergencies. Springfield Fire Company wished Firefighter Scott the best of luck with getting back on his way to Haiti and making a difference for the residents involved in the earthquake.
Springfield Fire Company would like to ask for the assistance of residents with clearing snow from around hydrants in their neighborhood. With the large snow mounds all around the township, many of the hydrants could be buried under many feet of snow. During an emergency, precious time could be lost looking for and digging out a fire hydrant. If you know of one in front of your home or in your neighborhood, make it a neighborhood project to help clear the snow from around it. You never know if that action could be saving your home or one of your neighbors.
