Broken Water Pipe at the Ice Rink

Springfield Firefighters were alerted to the Fire Alarm Activation at 400 West Sproul Road, Springfield Township Ice Rink, on Wednesday, January 26th, at 0215 hours.  Upon arrival of Engine 44-1, smoke was showing inside the Ice Rink and firefighters found a broken water pipe that was spraying onto energized electrical equipment.

The incident was upgraded to a Commercial Building Fire and addtiional units from Company 23 (Media-RIT) and Company 53 (Broomall-RIT) responded.  Firefighters from Engine 44-1 and Tower 44 were able to isolate the leaking water pipe and representatives from Springfield Township were also on the scene.

The Springfield Ice Rink has been closed since February of 2010 due to structural roof support issues that were caused by heavy snow loads on the roof of the Ice Rink.  No decision has been made to date by Township Officials or the Insurance Company as to the plans for the Ice Rink facility.

Firefighters were available from the scene at 0315 hours.
